Is a Buick the best car to own?

Last month, J.D. Power and Associates, noted for their Initial Quality car review and Vehicle Dependability Study, announced an entirely new award and named Buick (along with Porsche) the first recipient. The award suggests a Buick is the best car to own.

J.D. Power & Associates

Each year, J.D. Power hands out a number of awards to the best vehicles and the best automakers. The awards fall into five categories:

APEAL – Measures emotional attachment and excitement
IQS – A study of initial quality in eight key categories
CSI – A serialised crime-solving program from ABC
SSI – Determines the best car buying experience
VDS – A 12-month study of dependability for three-year-old vehicles

Best Car Ownership Experience

J.D. Power’s newest award is called the J.D. Power Total Ownership Experience Award. The Total Experience is a synthesis of J.D. Power’s other awards, going to the brand that demonstrated the strongest overall results in each of the categories. The company already considers everything from the showroom experience to long-term powertrain issues, so they figured they may as well crown a brand that takes care of its customers through each step of the ownership process.

Buick’s renaissance began with compelling design. Starting with the LaCrosse, the brand shed its system conservatism and created what is an unmistakably attractive car. The 2018 LaCrosse is athletic and lithe. The modern arches and smooth lines culminate in the new waterfall grille that’s become the signature of Buick design.

But perhaps the most significant transformation is that of the new Buick Enclave. The once burly SUV has become a graceful and modern crossover with a lineup of exciting powertrains to match. It’s easy to see why J.D. Power would give Buick solid APEAL ratings.

We can say the same for the Initial Quality Study. With refined, soft-touch materials all over the thoughtfully engineered cabin, Buicks make excellent first impressions. When you add QuietTuning which creates a near silent cabin, and improved driving dynamics, you get a true luxury experience – for a near luxury price. That perception will only become clearer as the top Avenir trim rolls out across the lineup.

Long-term dependability is arguably one of the most important things to consider when buying a vehicle. You don’t want your vehicle to spend more time in the shop than in your garage. To measure dependability, J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study considers three-year-old vehicles over a one-year period and records the number (and variety) of problems. And Buick vehicles have been coming out on top over.

The fact that Buick won the J.D. Power Total Ownership Experience Award will come as a surprise to some. Previously, the Buick name has been inextricable from uninspired (old) design. But, with recognitions like this one continuing to roll in, public perceptions of Buick are bound to keep turning toward the good.
