Encouraged by the relatively low price of oil, breakthroughs in the efficiency of combustion engines, and lightweight construction materials, automakers have continued to invest tons of resources in trucks and SUVs. For roughly the same reasons, customers have been abandoning cars in favour of bigger vehicles. And for those that think full-size pickups are too big, the choice has been an easy one. The 2018 GMC Canyon is handily the best mid-size pickup. That’s a bold claim, so let’s try to back it up.

Power

The 2018 GMC Canyon gives you the choice of three fantastic engines.

  • 2.8L Duramax Turbo Diesel: 181 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque
  • 3.6L VVT V6 with 308-horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque
  • 2.5L 4-cylinder with 200 horsepower and 191 lb.-ft. of torque

Those that want to prioritise towing and fuel economy will choose the Duramax Turbo Diesel, and the four-cylinder delivers some good bang-for-buck. But the star of the powertrain lineup is definitely the 3.6L V6. It comes with standard Active Fuel Management which reduces the number of cylinders in use when driving at low speeds to drastically improve fuel economy. It’s even paired with a refined 8-speed automatic transmission. Shorter space between the gears results in better fuel economy and improved acceleration.

Practicality

While the GMC Canyon is technically a mid-size pickup, it never feels too small. Inside, you get plenty of headroom and legroom, making it highly liveable. For rear passengers, the extended cab variant is a little tight, but the crew cab model offers a pretty comfortable ride. However, when it comes to trucks, the space offered in cargo areas is invariably more important to the average driver.

And you don’t have to worry there, because the Canyon offers plenty of space for equipment. At 1,879.6 mm, the Canyon’s long box is longer than the Sierra’s short box (1,760.98 mm) and only 12cm shorter than its standard box. However, even the 2018 Canyon with the short box offers plenty of room.

A Denali is the greatest realisation of professional-grade performance and luxury, and will never be mistaken for anything else on the road. The “Is That a Buick?” advertising campaign has come and gone, along with the stodgy vehicles of the past. Now Buick is letting its vehicles speak for themselves. The LaCrosse, Encore, and Enclave have all been completely redesigned under a modern and elegant aesthetic. But the 2018 Buick Regal is set to really push the envelope. Its exterior design is fluid and graceful and Buick is even offering a few performance variants.

The 2018 Buick Regal (Starting MSRP $31,945)

The Encore may be Buick’s best-selling model, and the LaCrosse may be the de facto flagship, but that should not overshadow the achievements of the 2018 Buick Regal. Just look at the thing! Instead of a sedan, Buick is calling the Regal a sportback, which means that the roof slopes downward from the mid-cabin to the rear. That architecture, combined with the sharp new headlights make the Regal look like a distant cousin of the Jaguar. Finally, with the new recessed grille and split-wing badge, drivers will be proud parking in front of the office.  

On lower trims, the interior remains conservative with a clear priority of comfort. That is by no means a bad thing. But it is safe – something you wouldn’t expect given the aggressive nature of the exterior redesign. And with Buick’s QuietTuning and available Active Noise Cancellation your cabin is supremely quiet, making it a joy on the highway. Of course, when you move to the more sport-oriented trims, you can still hear the engine growl.

This is where things get really exciting. Inarguably, the sports sedan market has been languishing. So, when an entry like the 2018 Buick Regal GS enters the field, people take note. When you wring out the standard 3.6L V6 and its 310 horsepower, it’s easy to get in tune with the road. The engine is confident, powerful, and even fun. Buick also includes standard Intelligent All-Wheel Drive in the 2018 Regal GS. By constantly monitoring the grip of each wheel, Intelligent AWD keeps the sportback tight and confident in the corners – in all conditions.

Buick Regal TourX

For 2018, the Sportback is not the only new face the Buick Regal will be wearing. Early next year, the Buick Regal TourX will be hitting showroom floors. The North American equivalent of the Opel Insignia is clearly a station wagon, but Buick would like us to all pretend that it’s a crossover, so shhhh!

Of course, Buick’s reluctance to use the words station and wagon in succession is understandable. The whole continent is SUV is crazy, and while there is no discernible performance difference between a station wagon and a small crossover, buyers have abandoned the former (cars in general, really) in favour of the latter. And while taste is subjective, it’s hard not to believe that the 2018 Regal TourX is far more handsome than the Buick Encore, for example.

Plus, its Intelligent AWD, increased cargo space, and long roofline make it an all-season warrior for weekend getaways. Pound for pound (or dollar for dollar) the Regal TourX puts high-priced competitors like the BMW 3-Series Touring wagon to shame. It’s engine has more horsepower and torque and it has an MSRP roughly $15,000 lower!

They specially tuned the suspension to minimize the sound of the road. Then, they insulated both sides of the dashboard with sound-absorbing material. Finally, they set the engine on a hydraulic mount to prevent vibration noise. But I guess you don’t really need to know all that. You just need to take a test drive and realise how pristinely quiet the 2018 Enclave is.

Enclave Avenir

The launch of the 2018 Buick Enclave will also be the launch of the Avenir sub-brand. The Avenir was a luxury sedan concept from 2016 that Buick decided to spin into a trim level like GMC has done with Denali. And, like Denali, the Buick Enclave Avenir will offer the best in terms of performance, style, and comfort. It starts with the interior, which features a custom chestnut and ebony theme. Real wood, leather, and embroidery accents create a perfectly refined atmosphere.

The Enclave Avenir comes with a customisable, 8” dash display. You can choose the layout and which is information is displayed. You also get a wireless charging mat. The GMC Yukon stands atop GMC’s SUV lineup. It’s a category in which practicality and power are essential. But, increasingly, luxury is too. In fact, more than half of Yukons sold are in the Denali trim level – GMC’s highest trim.

Form

The 2018 Yukon Denali features a defining new grille design. Alternating thin and thick slats replace the square mesh design of previous models. Matt Noone, director of Exterior Design, says, “The new grille, which is flanked by HID headlamps and LED Signature Lighting, advances the design legacy established with the very first Yukon Denali in 1999.” The grille is also made smarter by the inclusion of automatic shutters that close at speed to reduce drag and increase aerodynamics.

Function

However, you shouldn’t get the impression that power and practicality aren’t on show in the new Yukon. A 6.2L V8 engine, capable of 420 horsepower, is standard. Active Fuel Management is standard, too. The system switches from eight to four-cylinder operation automatically when performance demands are lower. Obviously, this improves fuel efficiency greatly. Additionally, the 2018 Yukon Denali will include a Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission which was developed in conjunction with Ford. Standard wheels are 20”, but there are also available 22” wheels.

Tech

In modern vehicles, luxury is synonymous with technology. The 8” diagonal GMC Infotainment system includes navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. With smartphone integration you can manage phone calls, messages, and media with voice controls. Buick is adding two new variants to the Regal: “Buick builds on its track record of making bold moves outside traditional vehicle segments to deliver unique customer offerings that fit modern lifestyles.” One of those “unique offerings” is a powerful sports sedan, the Buick Regal Sportback, and the other is a reimagined station wagon.

The Buick Regal Sportback starts with available All-Wheel Drive and eight-speed automatic transmission. The Sportback’s AWD system “uses two clutches at the rear wheels for seamless, smart torque distribution. Beneficial not just in snowy weather but also during spirited driving, the system relies less on braking to maintain maximum performance and efficiency.” Buick have also added a 2.0L engine that cranks out 250 horsepower to push those wheels.

In 2017, Buick’s entire lineup received 5-Star Safety Ratings from IIHS. Now, they’re building on that success with the latest in safety technology. For example, the Sportback will add an industry first active hood pedestrian safety system. The system “senses the imminent impact of a pedestrian between 25-48 km/h (16-30 mph) and uses a pyrotechnic actuator to lift the back of the hood […] to lessen the impact and potentially reduce injury.” But, with available Front Pedestrian Braking, collisions with pedestrians can hopefully be avoided entirely. Other available safety features on theBuick Regal Sportback include:

Buick Regal Tour X

The Canadian auto market is showing a high demand for compact and subcompact SUVs. Drivers want fuel efficient vehicles with AWD functionality. For this reason, all three of Buick’s SUVs outsell their cars. So, it makes sense that Buick would aim for the gap between the compact SUV and large sedans. Therefore, they’re introducing the 2018 Regal Tour X in hopes of making the station wagon sexy again. To its credit, the Tour X evinces some European flair. It’s design lines are much smoother than competitors like the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack. In other words, it’s not the boxy station wagon with rear-facing seats from your childhood road trips. But the logic behind reintroducing the station wagon is function, not form.

And the Tour X is certainly functional. It will have greater ground clearance than other Regal models and will likely feature All-Wheel Drive. Further, it will share the Sportback’s turbocharged 2.0L Tour X But perhaps its greatest feature is the ample cargo space. Behind the rear seats, you’ll find 33 cubic feet. When you fold those seats down, you’ll get 74 cubic feet. That’s enough space to rival most small SUVs. The cost, if you consider it as such, is the Regal’s size. The Tour X is incredibly long – seven inches longer than the comparable Subaru Outback. Then again, it will be a more manageable driving platform than most compact SUVs.

Both the Sportback and Tour X will be available at the beginning of next year. If you can’t wait that long, explore the 2017 Regal today.
