U.S. Finalized Mandatory Rearview Cameras by 2018

On March 31st, 2014 the U.S. Department of Transportation finalized standards that require all vehicles under 10,000 pounds to have rearview cameras by May 2018. You’d think by now, this would already be a piece of standard equipment, like an airbag, but it’s not. Did you know that the average blind zone ranges from between 15 to 25 feet? The bigger the vehicle, the bigger the blind zone. An average 232 fatalities and 13,000 injuries occur every year in the U.S. due to Backover Accidents, mostly children. With stats like that, it would seem common sense that this feature should have been standard right from the start.

By May 2018, this will be the law in the U.S. So what does this mean for Canada? It would be the hope that we institute this law! No one has released anything yet, but since we receive a large number of vehicles from the states, I imagine this will soon be standard in Canada as well.

If you don’t have a rearview camera on your car already, consider installing one. It’s one little piece equipment that can save a life and prevent heartbreak. If you’re in the market for a new or pre-owned vehicle, check out our selection with rear view cameras. Vehicles keep getting bigger and better, but simple accessories like a rearview camera can make such a huge impact on everyone.
